John "Jack" Ryland III

John Newton “Jack" Ryland, III of Danville, VA passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014. A native of Weeksville, N.C., he was the son of the late Robert Temple Ryland and Neva Austin Ryland. At the age of 8, he moved with his family to Sharps, where his father was a teacher, principal and later superintendent of Richmond and Westmoreland County schools. He attended Bluefield College and Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University). He served as a Turret Artillery Mechanic in the United States Army Third Armored Division during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1962. He married Darlene McLaughlin in 1957. After moving to Danville, VA in 1964, Mr. Ryland began employment at Southside Manufacturing Corporation as an architectural engineer designing and manufacturing custom casework and cabinetry. He was an active member of the Danville/Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce, serving as an ambassador for many years and official photographer for the Chamber Classic Golf Tournament. As owner of Ryland Photographics, he spent many weekends taking pictures for both the Bush and Winston Cup Race Series. He was also an avid supporter of the arts and a long time season ticket holder and contributor for the Caswell County Arts Council. Surviving are his wife: Darlene McLaughlin Ryland of the home; sister: Dorothy Ryland Claybrook and husband Lyn of Glouster, VA; sister-in-law; Anne Motely Ryland of St. Stephens Church, VA; sons: John Newton Ryland, IV of Glen Allen, VA and David Brian Ryland and wife Khrys Duddleston of Girdwood, AK; daughters: Suzanne Ryland Massey and husband Tommy of Reidsville, NC and Mary Kathleen Ryland of Blacksburg, VA; grandchildren: Catharine Ryland Moore, Emily Kate Ryland, and Jacob Newton Ryland. A memorial Service will be conducted on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at West Main Baptist Church with the Reverend Bruce Wilson officiating. A private interment will be Saturday, April 5, 2014 in the Ryland Family cemetery at Bruington Baptist Church, Bruington, VA. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family suggest that memorial donations be made to the Blairs Vol. Fire and Rescue at PO Box 242, Blairs, VA 24527, The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at 230 East Ohio St, Suite 304, Chicago, IL 60611, or to the American Heart Association- Mid Atlantic Affiliate, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.
