Virginia Murphy Owen

Virginia Murphy Owen went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 22, 2022. She was blessed with an amazing l00 years of life. She was the wife for over 60 years of Everett Hassel “Tee” Owen, who passed away on May 13, 2003. She was born on September 3, 1921 to the late Hugh Downey Murphy and Viola Shelton Murphy of Pittsylvania County. Mrs. Owen is survived by one daughter, Andrea Owen Coleman and husband Edwin Howe Coleman of Danville; two granddaughters, Tafton Coleman Trent and husband Matthew Samuel Trent of Danville and Hilary Shaye Coleman of Richmond, VA; and two precious great grandchildren, Emma Lane Trent and Nora Mae Trent of Danville. She was predeceased by one sister, Arline Murphy Giles and husband Leroy Benton “Red” Giles, and their daughter Dixie Lee Giles of Chatham, whom she loved dearly. Mrs. Owen lived in Pittsylvania County all of her life until moving to Stratford Commonwealth Senior Living in Danville. She worked at various jobs during her lifetime. The one she enjoyed the most was working with children with special needs at Callands Elementary School. She was a member of Swansonville United Methodist Church for over 70 years. There she held various positions such as teaching a children’s class for over 25 years, serving on the Administrative Board, singing in the choir, serving as the president of the United Methodist Women, and organizing the Young Hearts Senior Citizen group. She loved to cook and share her pies, biscuits, and recipes. She also enjoyed visiting residents at the Stratford Rehabilitation Center. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends, but she is in a better place. The family would like to thank Dr. V.K. Vasireddy, caretakers, and staff at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation Center for all of their love and care. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Swansonville United Methodist Church, 16492 Franklin Turnpike, Dry Fork, VA 24549 followed by graveside rites at the church cemetery. Officiating the service will be Pastors John Bright, Linwood Cook, and nephew Larry Owen. There will be visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. Please adhere to COVID 19 protocols, including wearing a mask while inside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Swansonville United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund or the charity of your choice. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Owen family.
