Gary W. Ball

Gary Wade Ball, 81, of 243 Lipton Lane, Danville, VA passed from this life on Monday, April 7, 2014 at Riverside Health and Rehab Center after a decline in health for the past 6 years. Born in Elkin, NC, on March 23, 1933, he was the son of the late John Virdle Ball and Beulah Hudson Ball. Gary first retired from Davis Storage in 1993 and later from Blackwell Automotive. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church for 44 years where he faithfully served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. On May 16, 1959, he married his sweetheart Kathryn Elizabeth Moore, who predeceased him in 2013. Gary is survived by his two daughters, Dawn Ball of Danville, and Beth Goard and husband Keith of Dry Fork; two adored grandchildren, Eli and Sarah Goard; two sisters, Faye Light and Sylvia Ball; one brother, Vernon Ball and wife ReElla; sisters-in-law Patricia Ball and Fay Moore, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Cecil Ball; sister, Ann Marcum and husband Harold; brothers-in-law Rudy Light, James Moore and Lilburn Moore; sisters-in-law Betty Robinette (Ed), Ola Robinette (Bill), Juanita Flippen (Hassel), and Betty Moore. Gary was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, proudly having served aboard the USS Albany and the USS Intrepid. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and devoted friend to all those fortunate enough to know him. He enjoyed gospel music, good jokes, Nascar racing, and summer vacations at the beach. His most cherished pastime, however, was simply spending time with his family. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 2:00 pm from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Brown and Rev. Curt Faison. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the funeral home and other times at the residence. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Gary’s caregiver, Kathy Williams, and the nursing staff of Riverside Health and Rehab Center’s West Wing. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Woodlawn Baptist Church Building Fund or the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).
