Herman Allen

Herman Lee Allen, 87 of 107 Wimbish Place, Danville died April 21 at his home. Born April 21, 1923 in Danville, the son of G.C. and Mae Reynolds Allen. He was married to Violet Phinney Allen for 64 years. He is survived by his wife Violet, son Ronald M. Allen of Danville, his daughter Judy E. Allen of Raleigh, N.C. Grandchildren Jennifer Thurman and husband John, Danville, VA and Neil Allen of Charlotte, N.C. 3 Great grandchildren Jenna, Stone and Noah Thurman, sisters Helen Atkinson of Chatham and Anne Yeatts of Richmond, Brothers Melvin and Richard of Danville, VA. He was predeceased by a son Jerry and brothers Howard and James Allen, and a sister Elizabeth Arthur. Herman was a WWII veteran who was proud of his service to his country. He was a member of the VFW and the DAV. He was wounded in Italy during the war and was awarded the Â?Purple HeartÂ? and the Â?Bronze StarÂ? for bravery. Herman worked for the Danville Post Office for 32 years. He was also a member of Stokesland United Methodist Church for 54 years and served as treasurer for several years. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend and will be missed. Â?Across the years I will walk with you. In deep green forests, on shores of sand and when our time on earth is through, in Heaven, too you will have my hand.Â? A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in Highland Burial Park with the Reverend Daryl Joyce and the Reverend Sarah Lou Doss officiating. Interment will follow the service in the cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Dan River Post #1097 and the U.S. Army. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 23, 2010 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral home and other times the family will be at the residence. In lieu of flower the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew at 202 Christopher Lane, Danville VA 24541. Thanks to Commonwealth Hospice for their loving care especially Sharron Jarrett and Jennifer Yeatts. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is respectfully serving the Allen family.
