Hilda Simpson Smith

On Monday, November 18, 2024, Hilda Simpson Smith, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after suffering a massive stroke. Days before her 94th birthday, she heard her Savior say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Hilda Simpson Smith, 93, of Danville, VA was born in Hurt, VA on November 25, 1930, a daughter of the late Reuben Floyd Simpson and Nannie Short Simpson. Hilda was treasured and loved by everyone who knew her and was affectionally called “Granny Smith”. Hilda enjoyed working outside. She grew a beautiful garden and loved tending the flowers in her yard. She sewed beautifully and mended the clothing of her family and friends. Hilda was a wonderful cook and no event was complete without her chicken salad or pecan pie. Hilda’s love extended beyond the love for her family. She was a care giver for numerous children, young adults and new families moving into her community and church. These extended families gave her the cherished name of Aunt Hilda. Granny loved and devotedly served as a faithful member of The Tabernacle all her adult life. Hilda was a blessing to everyone in so many ways. She led numerous individuals to her Lord and Savior and her life touched more lives than we know. She spent hours of her day making phone calls, writing cards, preparing meals, and ministering to others especially the shut-ins. Granny was a prayer warrior, faithful servant and the epitome of Christ’s love to all who knew her. Her legacy of love will be cherished by all, but her exemplary faithfulness will forever be remembered. Granny was ready to go to Heaven, but those of us left behind will miss her dearly. Granny was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Edward Henry Smith, her dear sister, Nancy Adams, and her brothers, Wilber O. Simpson and Milton David Simpson. Hilda loved her family dearly and treasured her time with them. Granny loved authentically, loudly, and without ceasing. She leaves behind her daughter, Vicky Geppert, her son Jerry Smith (Patti), her son, Donald Smith (Connie), and her daughter Jewel Hancock (Gerald). Granny leaves behind grandchildren, Michelle Tittiris (Daniel), Sarah McDowell (Wes), Emily Hancock, Erin Biggs (Jason), and Benjamin Geppert (Bethany). She leaves behind great-grandchildren Emma, Annsley, and Josiah Tittiris, Anna, Charity, and Gabriel McDowell, Brayden Allen, and Savannah Biggs. Visitation will be held at the Tabernacle, 1978 South Boston Road, Danville, VA on Friday, November 22, 2024 from 6-8pm. A funeral service honoring Hilda’s life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 2pm at the Tabernacle with Dr. Danny Campbell and Pastor Joey Bray officiating. Burial service to follow at Highland Burial Park. At other times, family will receive friends at Hilda’s residence, 2388 R&L Smith Drive, Danville, VA. Wrenn-Yeatts, North Main is respectfully serving the Smith family.
