Jack Powell

Mr. Meredith "Jack" Powell, age 91, of 1961 Vandola Church Road, died early Tuesday morning, October 30, 2012 at Riverside Health and Rehab Center after a two year decline in health. Mr. Powell was born on March 26, 1921 in Caswell County, N.C., a son of the late Ira Burch Powell and the late Lula Mae Lester Powell. He had lived most of his life in the Vandola community of Pittsylvania County. He had retired from the former Dan River Inc. where he worked for thirty four years in the Maintenance Department. Mr. Powell was a member of Vandola Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, trustee and on church maintenance. He was a member of the Keen Agers Group and he was an avid gardener. On November 9, 1940, he married Frances Davis Powell, who survives of Danville. In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters Judy P. Soyars (William J.), Peggy P. Cassada (Russell B.), two sons Timothy K. Powell all of Danville, Daniel M. Powell of Richmond, two sisters, Sadie P. Collins, Lula Mae P. Reynolds both of Reidsville, N.C., one brother, John T. Powell of Danville, six grandchildren, Kevin W. Soyars (Michelle), Lori S. Cassada (Edward), T. Fields Soyars (Jennifer), Russell S. Powell, Meredith P. Riggs (Robert), Russell B. Cassada III, six great grandchildren, Elizabeth L. Cassada, Edward B. Cassada III, Britton J. Soyars, Abigail G. Soyars, Emmeline K. Soyars and Zachary Riggs. He was predeceased by one sister, Margaret P. Keen, five brothers, Lonnie R. Powell, I. Carlmore Powell, Lester Powell, Luther T. Powell, Richard Powell and one half-sister, Dela Thacker. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm, on Thursday, November 1, 2012 from Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Scott Bortz officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the funeral home. The family request in lieu of flowers, that Memorial Donations be made to Vandola Baptist Church, 1950 Vandola Church Road, Danville, Va. 24541.
