James Linwood Newcomb Sr

James Linwood Newcomb, Sr., 85, of 209 Haynesworth Dr. Danville, VA went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, surrounded by his family who loved him dearly. Mr. Newcomb was born on July 3, 1927 in Caswell County, NC, the son of the late Dooger Thomas Newcomb and the late Bessie Inge Newcomb. Mr. Newcomb formerly worked for Sears installing floor covering before founding Newcomb Carpet, Inc. in 1972 and was active in his business until October 2012. He is known by all as a man who loved his Lord Jesus, his family, and his church with all of his heart. He also loved America and served his country in the US Army during World War II. Mr. Newcomb was a member of Riveroak Church of God for the past 18 years where he served on the church council and as an usher. He is predeceased by his first wife Corrine Lester Newcomb; his son, Ronald Lee Newcomb; two brothers, Tom Newcomb and Ed Newcomb; two sisters, Lillie Newcomb Taylor and Dotsie Newcomb Ferrell. Mr. Newcomb is survived by his wife of 35 years, Janice Oakes Newcomb, of their residence; three sons, Danny R. Newcomb and wife Kathy of Winston- Salem, NC, James Linwood Newcomb, Jr. and wife Wanda of Danville, VA, and Michael Wayne Newcomb and wife Stephanie of Danville, VA. He is also survived by six grandchildren, James Newcomb, III and his wife Sasha of Mooresville, NC, Kelly Newcomb Johnson and husband Brad of Naples, FL, Ryan Newcomb and wife Mary of Winston-Salem, NC, Ashley Newcomb Birkins and husband Kurt of Winston-Salem, NC, Anthony Newcomb and Emily Newcomb of Danville, VA; four great grandchildren, Will Johnson and Bailey Johnson of Naples, FL, Charlie Susan Birkins and Lila Birkins of Winston-Salem, NC; one sister ,Mabel McDaniel and husband Frank of Danville, VA; two brothers, William Newcomb and wife Mary Jean of Virginia Beach, VA, Samuel Newcomb and wife Joyce of Burlington, NC; one nephew who was like a brother to him, Bennie “Pete” Ferrell and wife Fannie of Danville, VA. He was also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He was never ashamed of his devout love for his Lord and Savior and openly shared the gospel with people wherever he would go. Numerous lives have been enriched because of his testimony and dedication to sharing his faith in Jesus Christ. He regularly expressed how much he loved people. Mr. Newcomb had a stay in DRMC from October 15 to November 14 and the family would like to thank Dr. Tom Boro and the entire physician and nursing staff for the excellent care and love that he received. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Riveroak Church of God with the Reverend Jason Cook and the Reverend Jackie Poe officiating. Interment will follow the service in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 23, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Riveroak Church of God and at others times the family will be at the residence, 209 Haynesworth Drive Danville, VA 24541. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Riveroak Church of God at 120 River Oak Blvd Danville, VA 24541.
