Mary Lee Wiseman

With heavy hearts, we share that Mary Lee Peele Wiseman, 83, passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at home surrounded by her family. Mary was born August 11, 1943, in Florence, South Carolina, to Otho Lee Peele and Annie Mae Cole Peele. She was married to the love of her life, Darrell Wiseman, for more than 57 years until his recent passing. Their love and devotion were at the center of her life. A fiercely loving and protective wife and mother, Mary made raising her family her life’s work. Her most precious joy and proudest accomplishment was the family she loved with all her heart. Being a loving grandmother to Stephen and Sarah was one of her greatest blessings, something she often spoke of with tremendous love and pride. She never met a stranger and could light up a room with her beautiful smile, warmth, humor, and feisty personality. Mary was a true Southern cook, and her kitchen was one of the many ways she showed love. Behind her humor and strength was an extraordinarily tender and giving heart. She possessed a servant’s heart and found great joy in caring for others. Mary was also a fighter. A 26-year cancer survivor, she faced numerous health challenges with remarkable strength, courage, and grace, fighting until her very last breath. Above all, Mary was a woman of deep Christian faith. During the final chapter of her life, that faith remained an extraordinary source of strength and peace. Her family shared sacred moments with her as she approached the end of her earthly journey, bringing tremendous comfort in knowing she knew exactly where she was going, who she would see there, and that we would all meet again in the blink of an eye. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Darrell; parents; daughter, Wendi Wiseman; son, Darrell Wiseman Jr.; sister, Annie Grace Yates; and brother, Thomas J. Yates. She is survived by her children, Ryan O’Neal Wiseman; Tracie Leigh Wiseman Scearce (Gary); Teresa Leigh Wiseman (Lee Wood); grandchildren, Stephen and Sarah Scearce; siblings, Maggie McConnell, Dorothy Gardner, and Betty Pappas; brother-in-law, Gene Wiseman; and many nieces and nephews. The Wiseman family extends heartfelt gratitude to Mary and Darrell’s extraordinary caregivers, past and present, under the direction of Barbara Stanfield, who became family and helped them remain in the comfort of their home, and to Mountain Valley Hospice for their compassion, dignity, and loving care. The funeral service will be held Sunday, September 13, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel, 5858 Riverside Drive, Danville, Virginia 24541 with Pastor Tim Knuckles officiating and Mrs. Sharon Knuckles speaking. A private family interment will follow September 14, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Florence, South Carolina. Though our hearts are heavy, we praise God Almighty for welcoming Mary home and find peace knowing she is reunited with her beloved Darrell. Her legacy of faith, love, generosity, laughter, protection, and courage will guide our family for generations to come.
