Nancy Buntin Jennings

Nancy Buntin Jennings, age 96, passed away peacefully at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center on Tuesday, January 9, 2018. She was a wonderful mother to her four children and “Mama J” loved her five grandchildren and her seven great grandchildren. Born to Juanita Ballow Buntin and Archer Green Buntin on August 16, 1921 in South Boston, VA. Nancy was married to James Lowell Jennings on August 7, 1939. Lowell predeceased her on Oct. 6, 1991 after 54 years of marriage. She is also predeceased by one of her beloved sons, Robert Lee Jennings, who died on July 7, 2014. Nancy is survived by one daughter, Barbara J. Deane Swanson (Samuel) of Ringgold; and two sons, James Lowell Jennings, Jr. (Ann) and Stuart Wayne Jennings (Dolly) of Danville. Her grandchildren are Mark Kevin Deane, Gregory Frank Simpson of Danville, Annette Deane Tennant (Michael) of Vero Beach, FL, Penny Simpson Rader (David) of Fincastle, and Elizabeth Jennings Hoskins (David) of Danville; and one-step grandson, Stephen Swanson (Stephanie) of Burlington, NC. Her great grandchildren are Magen Deane, Jennings Deane, Tayler Tennant, Daniel Rader, Annalee Rader, Graham Hoskins and Archer Hoskins; and two-step great grandchildren, Ashley and Bryan Swanson. Also surviving are many extended family members including nieces and nephews. She was an active member of Fairview United Methodist Church for 70 years where she was a teacher and held many different jobs. She was a member of the Henry Hardy Class during her last active years where she served as president and worked hard securing teachers and helping the sick class members. Nancy was a wonderful mother and homemaker, sewing, cooking, and canning. She loved playing golf, playing bridge, working puzzles, and reading. She worked at Virginia Carolina Tobacco Warehouse in the offices along with her husband for many years and at the age of 56, she became a U.S. Mail carrier. She carried the mail in the Danville Mall and later had a rural mail route. She retired from that after eleven years. She was always kind, strong, and willing to do whatever she could do to help family members and friends. She was always ready to travel and see new places, spending a month in Europe touring with her husband, Lowell and son Stuart when he was stationed there in the Air Force. In addition, she loved taking a trip out to the Western U.S. with her son Jim and wife Ann. She was loved by her children and will be missed so very much. We want to thank Ozelia Olushola who was our mother’s nurse and companion for more than four years. She gave so much kindness and love to her and to our entire family. In addition, we would like to thank the staff the nurses and CNAs at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center for their kindness and care that was given to our mother. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jennifer Coffey officiating. Interment will follow the service in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church and at other times will be at the children’s residences. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest that memorial donations be made to the Friendship Class at Fairview United Methodist Church, 1013 Westover Dr, Danville, VA 24541.
