Nannie Nevins

Mrs. Nannie Neal Nevins, 85, of Briarwood Drive died on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Nevins was born on January 29, 1925 in Pittsylvania County the daughter of the late Marvin M. Neal and the late Clara Patterson Neal. She spent all of her life in the Danville area where she worked for the Danville Public School System as a cafeteria worker. Nan loved working in her yard and for many years was an avid gardener. She enjoyed canning and preserving her fruits and vegetables and loved to share them with neighbors, friends and family. She always believed in helping those less fortunate, especially the elderly and those in poor health. She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Nevins was married to the late Donald P. Nevins of Ottumwa, Iowa. Mr. Nevins had a twenty year career with the U.S. Army and they traveled extensively. After WWII they lived in Germany for three years. Mrs. Nevins is survived by three daughters, Barbara Tally (Richard) of Summerfield, NC, Debra Owen (Freddie) of Danville and Myra Meissner (Rob) of Danville; three brothers, Avery Neal of Danville, Johnny Neal of Ringgold, and Jack Neal of Danville; three sisters, Mamie Pruitt of Danville, Frances Murphy of Spencer, VA and Nellie Dameron of Pelham, NC; and five grandchildren, Jon Griffin of Ringgold, Robert, Nevin, Meredith and Neal Meissner, all of Danville. She was a loving mother and a very thoughtful and fun grandmother. All will sadly miss the Â?little thingsÂ? she did, that were so special. She was predeceased by one brother, Harold W. Neal; two sisters, Rosa N. Petty, Lucy Williams; half-brother, Roy Patterson; and a grandson, Anthony Griffin. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend Bruce Wilson officiating. Interment will follow the service in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times at the residence of her daughter Debra and Freddie Owen, 230 Northmont Blvd, Danville. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to GodÂ?s Pit Crew at 2499 North Main Street, Danville, VA 24540, or to the Danville Life Saving Crew at 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.
