Nellie Farthing McDaniel

Nellie was born on March 7th 1931 to the late Mary Jane Short Farthing and Jessie Bennett Farthing in Renan, Virginia. Nellie spent her entire life in Pittsylvania County and Danville, Virginia. She graduated from Spring Garden High School with honors in 1948. She was a faithful member of the former Keen Street Baptist Church, now United Baptist Church, for more than 50 years. She loved her church and the people very much. She served as President of her Sunday School Class for many years and also other committees of the Church, including being ordained as a Deacon, and served as long as she was able. On July 3, 1948 she married her beloved husband Larry T. McDaniel, Sr. of 61 years who predeceased her on April 15, 2010. Prior to her retirement she was employed with Leggett’s Department Store, Chatham, Virginia and Belk Leggett downtown Danville, Virginia for many years. Nellie loved to travel, work in her home, enjoyed her family and friends. She truly loved her four great grandsons. They were the love of her life. She never met a stranger. She is survived by one son, Larry (Tommy) T. McDaniel, Jr., wife, Ann of Danville, Virginia, two grandchildren, Lisa M. McDaniel Powell, husband Kenneth W. Powell of Danville, Virginia and Larry T. McDaniel, III, wife Kimberly of San Antonio, Texas and four great grandsons Kenny and Carter Powell of Danville, Virginia and Cooper and Caden McDaniel of San Antonio, Texas, two sisters Kathleen F. Merchant, Danville, Virginia, Jean F. Yates, Lynchburg, Virginia, one brother, James M. Farthing, wife Patty, Gretna, Virginia and a number of dearly loved nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two brothers Jessie B. Farthing, Jr. (J.B.), Renan, Virginia and Marvin Ray Farthing, Gretna, Virginia. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 2:00 pm at United Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Adam Woods. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Nellie’s memory be made to United Baptist Church 3400 US Hwy 29 Danville, VA 24540. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is serving the McDaniel family.
