The Reverend Fred M. Cox, 75, of 324 Stanley Drive, Danville passed away suddenly on Friday, May 21, 2010 at his residence. Mr. Cox was born in Lilbourn, Missouri on July 14, 1934 the son of the late David L. Cox and the late Lydia Newman Cox. He is survived by his loving wife, the former Marilyn Heisner, to whom he was married on July 7, 1957. He graduated from Union University, Jackson, Tennessee, in 1958 and later earned his Masters degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, NC, in 1966. Vocationally, Mr. Cox faithfully served as a lifetime church pastor, shepherding and leading several congregations in both Missouri and in Virginia. Locally, his pastorates included Stateline Baptist Church, Shermont Baptist Church and Highland Park Baptist Church. More recently, he was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church in Danville where he served in recent years as a Sunday school teacher. In addition to being a former pastor, Mr. Cox was a lifetime student of GodÂ?s Word and studied the Bible passionately and systematically. He was and avid lover of music and was well-known for his banjo-playing and love for bluegrass music. He also had a keen interest in family history and enjoyed genealogical study. He will be remembered for his faithfulness to Christ, to his wife, and to his children and grandchildren. He was known for being pure in heart and for loving people, constantly helping and encouraging those around him. He loved to laugh and was a master at validating the good in others. He invested himself fully in the Kingdom of God and lived an exemplary Christian life. In addition to his wife of the residence, Mr. Cox is survived by three children: a daughter, Cheryl Brooks, and her husband Ted of Raleigh, NC; a son, David B. Cox, of Raleigh, NC; and a son, Gary Cox, and his wife Karen, also of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Michael Brooks, Bethany Cox, Zachary Cox, Stafford Cox, Caroline Cox, and Tyler Cox; one brother, Travis Cox, and his wife Marge, of Sikeston, Missouri. Funeral service will be conducted on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Baptist Church, on Westover Drive, with the Reverend Carl Burger and the Reverend Curtis Faison officiating. Interment will follow the service in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 23, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times the family will be at the residence of 324 Stanley Drive, Danville. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Woodlawn Baptist Church Building Fund, 2500 Westover Drive, Danville, VA, 24541.
