Robert Douglas Porter, Sr.

Robert Douglas Porter, Sr., 82, of Danville, VA passed away peacefully on Monday, November 18, 2024. Doug was born in Danville, VA on July 19, 1942, a son of the late James Kermit Porter and Nettie Neal Porter. He lived all of his life in the Danville area where he went to Whitmell School and then later joined the United States Army. He was a dedicated and hardworking man; Doug gave 30 years of service to the Danville Wastewater Treatment Plant before retiring. In his retirement, he poured his energy into his passions for racing and antiques, sharing his love at Dan River Antiques. His love for these hobbies reflected his keen sense of detail, history, and community connection. On April 16, 1966, Doug married the love of his life, Sallie Anne Giles, with whom he shared a remarkable journey of love and devotion. Together, they raised two devoted sons, Douglas Porter, Jr. (Christy) and Mark Porter (Patricia). Doug was a proud grandfather to five cherished grandchildren: Emilee Porter, Grace Porter (Brady Owen), Olivia Porter, Kendall Porter, and Mark Allen Porter (Kathryn Saunders), all of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Doug is survived by his beloved sisters Diane Ragans and Shirley Mae Johnson. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Jane Ragsdale (Mike) and Belva Flanigan (Jerry), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, parents, and sister Nancy Vaughan. Doug will be fondly remembered for his steadfast devotion to his family, his kind and gentle spirit, and his zest for life. Whether at the racetrack or simply enjoying time with loved ones, he found joy in every moment. Doug’s legacy of love, dedication, and passion will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will forever cherish the many ways he enriched their lives. A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at Highland Burial Park with Mr. Jerry Kiker officiating. The family will be at the residence of his son, Doug Porter, Jr.,466 Oak Forest Circle, Danville, VA 24540. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Dr. Miller and staff at Cardiology Consultants of Danville, the staff at Piney Forest Health Care and Rehabilitation Center and to Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Homes.
