J. Ray Martin

November 21, 1932 - May 11, 2022

James Ray Martin, 89, formerly of Danville went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, May 11, 2022. Born in Leaksville, NC on November 21, 1932 a son of the late Elwin Curtis Martin and Lucille McDaniel Martin. Ray was the district Manager for Life of Virginia Insurance Company and Peoples Life. He taught Advance Underwriting. He served in the US Army and retired from the Army National Guard with the Rank of Brigadier General. Ray was the Past President of Danville Underwriters Association. Served on the Board for Hope Harbor and Crossroads Counseling Service, and President of the Danville Gideon’s Camp. Ray was converted and saved at the age of 14 and has been active in his service since that time. He was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church. On March 24, 1951 he married Lorene East Martin, who survives. Survivors also include a son, Harold Duane Martin, and wife Rehse, four grandchildren, Daniel Martin (Kelly), Kelly Martin, Whitney Martin, Andrew Martin (Jenna), and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Brian Keith Martin, a sister, Marie Moore, and a brother, Elwin Martin, Jr. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Faith Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel Lackey officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday Evening from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Gideon’s or to the Good News Jail Ministry. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Martin family.
