John C. Clardy

December 27, 1925 - March 31, 2019

John Calvin Clardy, 93, died Sunday, March 31, 2019, at Roman Eagle Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Danville, VA. He was born December 27, 1925 in Halifax County, VA. His parents were the late John Preston Clardy and Fannie Bet Whitlow Clardy of Vernon Hill, VA. Mr. Clardy was a graduate of Wilson Memorial High school in News Ferry, VA, and attended V.P.I., in Blacksburg, VA. He was a graduate of The National Art School in Washington, DC. His military service in World War II included deployment to Germany where he was a military policeman. After 32 years of employment, Mr. Clardy retired from Sears-Roebuck in Danville, VA, where he was a department manager. For many years, he has faithfully attended church services and Sunday school at Ringgold Baptist Church. An active member of the Dan River Ruritan Club since 1981, Mr. Clardy served in many leadership positions, including President. He received a Tom Downing Fellowship, awarded by the National Ruritan Foundation in 2012. Fewer than 1 percent of Ruritans receive this honor. He was co-founder of the Dry Fork Ruritan Club in 1991. Mr. Clardy was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Thelma Evans Clardy, a brother, Roger Preston Clardy, and sisters Kate Evelyn Scruggs, Eunice May Clardy and Thelma Alice Clardy. Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Clardy Mitchell (Kenneth) and Desiree Clardy Phelps (Richard); two sons, John Calvin Clardy, Jr (Jane) and Wayne Evans Clardy (Tamara); eight grandchildren, David Mitchell (Jennifer), Daniel Mitchell (Liz), Eric Clardy (Marina), Adam Clardy (Amanda), Christopher Jones (Aisha), Erin Fulcher (Justin), Cassidy Clardy, and John Richard Phelps (Jessica). There are nine great-grandchildren, Eve, John, Kristina, Luke, Laith, Devin, Austin, Branson, Lelia. There is 1 great-great grandson, Xavier. Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m. at Ringgold Baptist Church with The Rev. Duane Caldwell and the Rev. Carl Burger officiating. Interment of Mr. Clardy, along with the ashes of his wife, Thelma, will follow at Oak Level Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Halifax, VA. Visitation will be prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Ringgold Baptist Church and at other times, the family will be at his daughter’s residence, Mrs. Desiree Phelps, at 228 Updike Place, Danville 24541. Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel is respectfully serving the Clardy family.
