July 17, 1951 - May 16, 2021
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Linda Robinson Mitchell, age 69, of Danville, VA, our most beloved sister, aunt and friend on Sunday May 16, 2021. Linda was born in Richlands, VA on July 17, 1951, and grew up in Swords Creek, VA. Her work ethic and tenacity were instilled early on her family’s farm in the hills of coal mining country. She graduated from Virginia Tech in 1973 with a degree in physical education. Linda started working in health care and in time trained to be a physical therapy assistant. She moved to Danville in 1985 to accept a position at the local hospital. Danville and its residents became her home, and she served the local community until March 2021. Linda was completely dedicated to the care of her patients. Her coworkers affectionately called her the “drill sergeant,” as she could motivate even the most stubborn patients on their path to recovery. Linda met Robert Mitchell and they married in 1986. Linda and Bob built a home in Danville. Linda loved dogs, especially German Shepherds, and gave several their best dog life over the years. Her dogs reflected her own values of loyalty and strength. She most recently had two German Shepherds, Champ and Dixie. Linda also took pride in her yard and gardens. Her yard is bright every spring with daffodils and forsythia, followed by beautiful azaleas, roses, and lilies. She had a full-time job with her yard and could be seen—even after a full day working with patients—outside with her shovel, tractor, or John Deere. Linda was a tough lady. Whether it was working with a patient many times her size, to cutting down trees in her yard, she could get any job done. She did not quit and had a giant spirit in her small frame. Despite Linda’s generosity in word and in deed, she never expected anything in return—any act of kindness shown to her was met with gratitude. Linda was always thinking of others and ready to lend a hand. She could not give enough. Despite her cancer diagnosis, she adopted a unit deployed to Afghanistan and ensured they knew they were thought of and treated with her famous peanut butter cookies. We have probably all had a slice of her pound cake or pecan pie. Linda loved her family and friends. She loved to visit her relatives in southwest Virginia and send cards and notes. Her selflessness, humor, and kind heart endeared her to others. Linda will be missed. She is remembered by her sister, Alice Ware of Spring City, TN, sister and brother-in-law Glenna and Jim Broderick of Hendersonville, NC, many nieces and nephews, and friends and coworkers. She is joining her parents, Cecil and Edna Elkins Robinson, brother, Guy Robinson, nephew James Broderick, and husband Robert Mitchell. Linda is loved in heaven and on earth. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 28, 2021, at 2:00 PM at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Bill Lavinder and Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM. Interment will follow the service in Danville Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Pittsylvania County Pet Center, 11880 US-29, Chatham, VA, 24531 or to another Animal Charity of your choice. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Mitchell family.
