Shirley H. Rhone

November 30, 1934 - May 4, 2022

Shirley Virginia Rhone passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 4th in the comfort of her home, with her daughter right by her side. She was born November 30, 1934 in Sandston, Virginia to Ida Roland and Gordon “Slim” Huggins. As a young girl she decided to quit school and go to work. During that time, she was discovered as a model and would help stores decide which clothes they would like to keep in their inventory. She married her sweetheart, Robert Fred Rhone, on December 22nd, 1951. They enjoyed traveling together during Robert’s time in the United States Navy. Her favorite place to explore was Charleston, South Carolina. After Robert’s retirement they settled in Danville, Virginia where they finished raising their three children and where Shirley would decide to finish her schooling and graduate with her GED in the same year that her youngest child graduated high school. Her favorite activities consisted of gardening, sewing for the NJROTC at George Washington High School, and spending time with her grandchildren. She always took great pride in her homemaking skills and made sure her house was always surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers. On any given afternoon you would be sure to find her sitting on her back porch swinging and enjoying the sun. She had extremely talented sewing skills which ranged from military uniforms to beautiful handmade quilts for her grandchildren. She enjoyed getting the family together for holidays and gatherings where she would be the first to join in on the bellows of laughter you would be sure to hear coming from her home. As a jack of all trades, she was employed by Floor Care Specialists until she was 82 years old, when she finally decided to retire. Many friends and family enjoyed her made-from-scratch pizzas and her secret recipe stir fry. She took joy in feeding friends and family, watching her grandchildren play various sports and yelling at the TV during any and all sporting events-especially her beloved Dallas Cowboys. She had a standing date with her best friend, Nancy Powers every Wednesday where they would enjoy the early bird special at whoever’s turn it was to pick. She also enjoyed attending Compassion Church with her family on Sunday mornings. Shirley is survived by her children, Robert Allen Rhone, Kenneth Dale Rhone, Joclyn Rhone Lynch (Jeff). Her grandchildren, Sean Rhone, Mark Rhone, Tara Payne (Toby), Daniel Rhone (Jennifer), Alexandra Haymes (Bradley), Joseph Seamster (Madison), Camron Beale, Benjamin Lynch, Baylee Lynch, Destiny Lynch, Naomie Lynch. She also loved Joey Johnson as one of her own grandbabies. Although she proclaimed to not like animals at all, she sure loved her bulldog Bleu. She was predeceased by her parents, her sweetheart, her sister Dorothy Lee Keeton, and her beloved dog Bentley. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 14th, 2022, at 215 Third Avenue, Compassion Church Danville, Virginia at 10 o’clock and service to follow at 11 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, please spend some time with your kids/grandkids digging in the dirt to plant something beautiful and make a priceless memory. ¬ Donations can be made to Commonwealth Hospice: Hospice Promise Foundation, 159 Executive Dr. Suite H-2, Danville, Virginia 24541 or Compassion Church Danville, 215 Third Ave., Danville, VA 24540.
