Andrew Oakes

Andrew ?Jack? Oakes, 83, of 130 Oakes Lane, Ruffin NC died on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past eighteen months. Mr. Oakes was born in Pittsylvania County on May 9, 1927 a son of the late William Henry Oakes and the late Berta Turner Oakes. He had lived in the Martinsville area for 28 years, then in Oklahoma for five years, and then he lived in Ruffin, NC for twenty years. He was a self employed mechanic and he was also a minister at Whitmell Christian Church. He served his country in the US Navy in WWII. Mr. Oakes was first married to the late Catherine Bowles Oakes, who died on April 5, 1997 and then he married Evelyn Scarce Oakes who survives of the residence. In addition to his wife, Mr. Oakes is survived by six children, June Williams of St. Cloud, FL, William Oakes of Martinsville, VA, Rosie Corhan of Lithia Springs, GA, Timothy Oakes of Whitmell, VA, Rita Adkins of Danville, VA, and John Oakes of San Antonio, TX; three sisters, Edna Davis of Newport News, VA, Betty Oakes Hyler of Danville, VA and Linda Shelton of Chatham, VA; three step children, Mark Scarce of Dry Fork, VA, Elizabeth Wimmer of Martinsville, VA and Steffen Scarce of Dry Fork, VA; and eleven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, six step grandchildren and one step great grandchild. In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. Oakes was predeceased by two children, Roger Oakes and Jerry Oakes; and nine siblings, Turner Oakes, Shirley Oakes, Mary Hedrick, Elizabeth Oakes, Marie McGuire, Kate Adkins, Billy Wayne Oakes, Jettie Lewis, and Janie Oakes. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with Minister Lawrence Harris and Minister Hershel Stone officiating. Interment will follow the service in Roselawn Cemetery in Martinsville, VA. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence, 130 Oakes Lane, Ruffin NC 27326. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Whitmell Christian Church Carpet Fund at 2628 Whitmell School Road, Dry Fork VA 24549. The family would like to give a special thanks to his caregivers Tina Terry, Cheryl Lucas, Terri Oakes, and Tammy Pruitt. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is respectfully serving the Oakes family.
