John William Knapp

John William Knapp, 78, of 13055 West Lynchburg-Salem Turnpike, Montvale, VA died Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Woodhaven Nursing Home after a decline in health for the past four and a half years. He had been a resident of Woodhaven N.H. since December 18, 2012. Mr. Knapp was born in Akron, Ohio on September 17, 1934, a son of the late Fredrick Joseph Knapp and Mary Kelly Knapp. He lived his early years in Akron, Ohio and graduated from St. Vincent High School and from Akron University with a degree in Business. John moved to Danville, VA in 1973 and retired, after 36 years, from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. from the Management Planning Dept. in Akron. While in Danville, VA he worked as manager of Shipping and Production. After retirement from Goodyear he moved to Nokomis, Florida before returning to Danville in 2009. John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed his family, traveling, golf and volunteering for Habitat for Humanity while in Akron. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a veteran, serving honorably in the United States Army. On June 7, 1958 he married Barbara Adele Herring Knapp, she died on January 6, 1994. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers and one sister. John is survived by two sons, John Christopher Knapp, and wife Charlene, of Charlottesville, VA, and Michael Fredrick Knapp, and wife Lourdes, of Newport News, VA; two daughters, Leslie K. Kandl, Jacksonville, FL, and Jeannie K. Bennett, and husband Scott, of Danville, VA; a brother, Robert L. Knapp, and wife Althea, of Carmel, CA; eleven grandchildren, Daniel Elliott, Michael Kandl, Daniel Kandl, Kyle Knapp, Ann Kandl, Kathryn Bennett, Michael Knapp, Nick Kandl, John Bennett, Lourdes Knapp and Andrew Knapp; three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Father James Dorson officiating. Interment will follow the service in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday at the funeral home from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. Also, they suggest that memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association of Danville/Pittsylvania Co., 308 Craighead Street, Suite 104, Danville, VA 24541.
