Richard Wilkerson

Richard Add ?Dick? Wilkerson, 93, of Martha Street, Danville, VA went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning of Friday, August 3, 2012 after being in declining health for the past six months. Mr. Wilkerson was born in Halifax County on July 16, 1919 a son of the late Bayles E. Wilkerson and Mattie G. Elliott Wilkerson. He had lived all of his life in Pittsylvania County and Danville areas, where he was a farmer until he became employed by the former US Gypsum Corporation where he worked in the Maintance Department until his retirement. Mr. Wilkerson was a member of the Shady Oak Baptist Church where he had served as an usher and he was a long time member of the Dan River Hunting Club. On January 22, 1938 he married the late Mary Zelna Shields Wilkerson who died on August 28, 2001. Mr. Wilkerson is survived by two sons Kenneth ?Ken? Richard Wilkerson and wife Sandy of Ringgold, VA, James Allen Wilkerson and wife Patsy of Danville, VA, four daughters Gloria Jean W. Anderson of Sutherlin, VA, Joan W. Haley and husband Ronnie of Danville, VA, Diane W. Crumpton and husband Robert ?Dude? of Providence, NC and Bonnie W. Ross and husband Jim of Brockway, PA, one sister Alease W. Matherly of South Boston, VA, one brother William Wilkerson of Danville, VA, 15 Grandchildren, 21 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren. He was predeceased by three sisters Dora W. Doss, Ella W. Lester, Jo W. Shelhorse, three brothers Charlie Wilkerson, John Wilkerson and Jack Wilkerson. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, August 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. from the Shady Oak Baptist Church by the Reverend Kenneth Hammock and Reverend Avery Marshall. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel and at other times they will be at the residence of his daughter Diane and Robert ?Dude? Crumpton, 71 Annie Compton Rd., Providence, NC 27315. The family request that in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to the Shady Oak Baptist Church Building Fund, 1739 Walters Mill Road, Providence, NC 27315.
